News: Get to know: Shaun Okojie

Luton born Shaun started his career with the youth teams at Luton and Hitchin Town (where he impressed by hitting a phenomenal 24 goals in nine games for their under-19s), before signing for Corinthian Casuals in July 2015.

At 6’3” or 1.90m for you younger lot the 23 year old has already hit double figures this season despite being hampered by injuries and has all the attributes to fulfil his ambition of playing professionally.

What persuaded you to sign for Leatherhead in the summer?

Due to having an up and down season with Aldershot last year. I wanted to get back to scoring goals & being happy playing football again. The manager believed in me & wanted me quite early so I decided to sign.

What are your personal ambitions for your time with the Tanners?

My personal ambitions would be to be in and around the leagues top goal scorers by the end of the season. Which would directly be helping the team as well. I would also like us to at least get into the play-offs this season.

What excites you most about the challenge ahead?

Just the fact that the sky is the limit, nowadays playing in non league has almost turned into a platform for players to show they’re good enough to be a professional. So I'm glad Leatherhead are giving me that opportunity to showcase what I can do.

Growing up which player did you take inspiration from?

At a young age Thierry Henry was my initial football idol. He indirectly made me start loving football when I saw him curl a ball into the top corner on tv which then led to me playing football. As the years went on & I was in my mid-teens I started to love Ronaldinho.

Which team do you support?

I support Arsenal.

Aside from football what is your main interest?

I like music a lot.

You’re hosting a dinner party, which three celebrities would you invite and why?

Chris Tucker, Jack Whitehall & Carl Pilkington because they're all people I find really funny so it would be a good laugh.

What has been the highlight of your football career to date?

Scoring the winning goal in my first home game for Aldershot would probably top it.

Do you have any pre match rituals?

I say a prayer.

Do you have a nickname?

Not that I know of. (Ed. Macca calls you Big Man a lot!)

Who has been the biggest influence on your playing career to date?

Probably James Bracken as he was manager when I scored 40 goals for Corinthian Casuals.

If you were marooned on a desert island which teammate would you want with you?

I’ll probably take Will Salmon mostly because of his age and life experiences + he seems like a good problem solver.

What do you do as a day job?

I do deliveries for a company.

What music do you listen to before a match?

Hip Hop mainly, sprinkled with a bit of RnB sometimes.

Which actor would play you in a movie?

Morris Chestnut (Ed. best known for his role in Boyz N The Hood).

What is your footballing ambition?

To play in the Premier League & represent my country.

Have the Tanners fans seen the best of you yet?

Due to my injuries no I don't so, but I think they've seen glimpses of what I'm capable of though.

What is your favourite movie?

Inception is my favourite movie, I like movies that make you think a little & aren’t straight to the point. (Ed. For those of you not familiar with the film Inception is a science fiction action film starring Leonardo DiCaprio).

Finally, do you have a message for the Leatherhead supporters?

I would like to thank them for the constant support through the ups & downs & I would love to repay them through my performances on the pitch (ed. 12 goals to date is a pretty good start).
